Not that long ago, if BMW introduced one new model a year it was a time of great excitement. This is no longer the case; as we have seen over the last couple of years, BMW has introduced a range of models in various styles, sizes and engine configurations. BMW is in the business of producing motorcycles that will appeal to a larger audience than in the past. This trend has continued at the EICMA show in Milan. BMW has, for the first time, shown four new motorcycles. The F 800 S was released to the press in photos last month; that was expected to be shown in Milan but BMW Motorrad went further. The second in the new family of twins, the F 800 ST - a more touring machine, was also uncovered. F800ST The excitement continue with the unveiling of the long awaited successor to the R 1100 S, the R 1200 S and the K 1200 GT, the Sports/Touring version of the award winning K 1200 S. These, along with the R 1200 GS Adventure that was launched in Birmingham a few weeks ago, make five new models in a month; an unprecedented development in the history of BMW. BMW is no longer the quiet and, some critics may have said, boring brand. The new F Series uses a power plant that puts out 84 hp and, with these machines weighing 210 kg wet, performance should be sprightly. The S, which we saw in the October and November editions of BeeEm, is for those who enjoy their riding with a sporty style; aggressive but comfortable riding position. The ST comes in a recognisable F package but has enhanced weather protection, larger 'screen and raised 'bars. The package comes complete with standard luggage grid. The panniers, that will be a popular option, will give the ST the ability to head off for a day or a week. The K 1200 S, after early teething problems, has taken off. It has taken BMW into the high performance arena, but in a distinctively BMW manner. Together with the K 1200 R they have redefined what a BMW is, or can be. The latest model to use the 167 hp, 55o, four-cylinder motor is the K 1200 GT. The GT uses the K 1200 S package but with the inclusion of adjustable and optional heated seat, adjustable handlebars, electrically adjustable windscreen and a larger, lower fairing for greater weather protection and comfort. It is a Sports/Tourer for those who appreciate comfort as well as sporting dynamics. A new BMW pannier system tops off this package. The GT will prove to be, perhaps, the best seller in the K range. K1200GT The R 1100 S introduced riders to a modern BMW sports motorcycle. It gave many their first experience of a BMW twin and gave BMW unprecedented exposure in the BoxerCup race series. Ever since the R 1200 GS introduced the new boxer motor, there have been rumours of a new S. Computer generated images, of how it would look, became common. This was a model that inspired the imagination of the fans of the sporting boxer. The new R 1200 S will not disappoint. It has taken the R 1100 S, made improvements and, in so doing, taken it to a higher level of dynamic performance. This is an uncompromising sports machine. The seat is narrow at the front and, together with the new fairing and exhaust exiting under the seat; it gives the impression of a motorcycle ready to go. R1200S It is not just looks. The boxer motor is the most powerful ever, 122 hp at 8,250 rpm. In road trim, with a full tank of 17 L of Premium Unleaded, it weighs 213 kg (195 kg dry). The R 1200 S has been developed to give maximum rider control. The frame and suspension have been upgraded to give sensitive response and steering precision. Although the Telelever front and Paralever rear suspension is firmer, the ride quality and comfort is still up to BMW's usual high standard. The maximum lean angle of 52o is 2% more than on the R 1100 S. As an option there is a newly developed ABS braking system. It only adds 1.5 kg to the bike and uses an upgraded, two-channel system that does not have the integral function or the electric servo. To complete the sporting package, it can be deactivated when on a track-day; the best of both worlds. The new S will stand apart in the range, for those who appreciate a lightweight, dynamic and focused boxer-powered motorcycle. It has all come with a rush; there has never been a time like this. These new models will all be available in Australia at some time in 2006. It will be very busy at BMW Motorrad dealerships as potential new riders to BMW and those of us with a current connection to the marque test ride these unique machines. This is a snapshot; all the details will be in the December edition of BeeEm world. |
